Walking through Volterra!

Chiostro delle Monache is situated in a privileged position to visit the center of Volterra.

The Medicean Fortress and the Etruscan Museum are at a walking distance of 20 min. From there you can go on towards the historical city center crossing Piazza XX Settembre, where you can visit in the Churchof S. Agostino the marvelous new Sacred Art Museum.

Just outside the Big Old Gate of the Church you turn right and walk along the historical Via Gramsci and Via Matteotti reaching finally the great Piazza dei Priori, the main square of the town.

In Piazza dei Priori it is possible to visit the Palazzo dei Priori and its Town Council Hall (XII cent) climbing then up to the tower, from where you will have a magnificent view of Volterra and of the whole surrounding area.

If you continue on to the Piazza San Giovanni, you can visit the Cathedral and the Baptistery (XII cent).

From the Piazza San Giovanni you can follow the narrow alley that takes you to Piazza dei Fornelli, from where you can take a picture to the whole Val Di Cecina towards the seaside.

From there you can go down to Porta All’Arco, one of the most important Etruscan Monument in the Etruscan history.

Climbing Via Porta all’Arco again you will be in front of Via Matteotti and you can turn right up to the Parco Fiumi and the Archeological Area.

On the opposite site of Piazza dei Priori, instead, you can turn down to Via Sarti and find the ancient Palazzo Minucci Solaini and its Art Gallery with the Deposition of Rosso Fiorentino and other important collections.

Going on you will reach the Persio Flacco Theatre and Palazzo Viti, a private palace of the renaissance time.

From the Art Gallery it is possible to reach a narrow way facing the Roman Theatre, where in the summer there are already many performances.

Lots of Churches should be visited in the city center, the most important the Church of San Francesco with its small and elegant chapel. All along the ways you walk through discovering this magic town, lots of small craft shops and food and wine shops will show you what good and beautiful gives our region. Everything answers to ancient flavours and gestures, which must be understood and known with that relax and calmness, that only a small ancient town can give.
